Rickshaw Review

Whether it's blasting the grit off the beer signage at the late, lamented Eagle Tavern or serenading society swans at the Black and White Ball, the Bay Area's raucous Extra Action Marching Band can be counted on to push the envelope, with a blast of only-in-S.F. exuberance and sexy, in-your-face spectacle. That's why an aficionado like David Byrne drags the crew wherever he goes in the Bay Area or why these rough-and-tumble rapscallions can win over the brassy Balkans on tour in Serbia. On June 11 at the Uptown in Oakland, the sprawling 30-plus ensemble of brass players, drummers and leggy flag girls and boys seemingly met their unholy match in the form of Denver opener Itchy-O Marching Band, whose members delivered loud sheets of throbbing electro-noise and dragged a lion dancer in their wake. Good thing it's all in the family: Itchy-O is a solo project of Extra Action (and S.F. Taiko Dojo) vet, percussionist and filmmaker Scott Banning.

This is really one hell of a video. Nice work PuzzlingEvidenceTV. (It's labeled Uptown in Oakland but it's actually the Rickshaw in San Francisco.)

The waiting

We got back on the road and then our other bus broke down. We've spend the day in lone tree. Wrong parts were ordered and we ended up spending the night. It's supposed to be repaired by 10am. We go on at 11pm tonight in SF.

Best Guerrilla-Style Band - 2011

Itchy-O Marching Band

While living in the Bay Area, Scott Banning, an associate of Crash Worship, was a member of the Extra Action Marching Band and the San Francisco Taiko Dojo. But it wasn't until he decided to try to turn Itchy-O from a sit-down musical endeavor into something more visceral — and on the move — that he managed to combine his passions and experience into the perfect project. Initially playing as a surprise guest at other shows, Itchy-O Marching Band has become an unexpected and frequent presence at a broad swath of public events, one that has brought smiles to many faces with its solid marching-band instrumentation and experimental electronic accompaniment.

A small bit on a performance...

http://aquamarinewhitegoldring.reviewsallonline.com/rick-griffith-has-designs-on-denver-bold-ones/

...At 9:15 p.m., and again at midnight, the music dies down as drumbeats and electronic squeals echo through the party and musicians in ski masks, helmets and sombreros stream through the studio’s garage door, followed by dancers in a Chinese dragon costume. as the cacophony of Itchy-O, Denver’s avant-garde marching band, builds to a crescendo, filling the room with strobe-light flickers and smoke-machine fog, party-goers crowd in and dance to the frenetic beat.
From the vantage point of a second-story loft, Griffith nods his head to the music...
