Rickshaw Review

Whether it's blasting the grit off the beer signage at the late, lamented Eagle Tavern or serenading society swans at the Black and White Ball, the Bay Area's raucous Extra Action Marching Band can be counted on to push the envelope, with a blast of only-in-S.F. exuberance and sexy, in-your-face spectacle. That's why an aficionado like David Byrne drags the crew wherever he goes in the Bay Area or why these rough-and-tumble rapscallions can win over the brassy Balkans on tour in Serbia. On June 11 at the Uptown in Oakland, the sprawling 30-plus ensemble of brass players, drummers and leggy flag girls and boys seemingly met their unholy match in the form of Denver opener Itchy-O Marching Band, whose members delivered loud sheets of throbbing electro-noise and dragged a lion dancer in their wake. Good thing it's all in the family: Itchy-O is a solo project of Extra Action (and S.F. Taiko Dojo) vet, percussionist and filmmaker Scott Banning.
